The Titanic in drydock.
Crew loading mail bags onto the Titanic.

This letter was found with the papers of the Official Administrator for the County Court of New Westminster. This official was responsible for winding up the affairs of people who died intestate (without a will). We do not know who ‘Uncle’ is, but the letter itself is fascinating for the two topics mentioned: Irish Home Rule and the sinking of the RMS Titanic. In particular, the writer is affected by the enormous impact the Titanic disaster had on the people of Belfast , many of whom worked on or were involved with its construction. RMS stands for Royal Mail Steamer; not only was the Titanic the largest passenger steam ship of its time, it could also carry the mail. In fact, the writer’s previous letter to her uncle was on the Titanic when it sunk.
