Benefits of Trails & Greenways

  • Greenways strengthen pedestrian linkages between major parks, community facilities, neighbourhoods and surrounding communities.
  • Greenways can decrease reliance on the automobile by supporting other modes of transportation such as walking, inline skating and cycling. Decreasing reliance on the automobile also helps reduce pollution.
  • Greenways provide opportunities for recreation and therefore support health and fitness.
  • Greenways can support community building by involving the community in the design and construction of enhancements.
  • Greenways provide opportunities to celebrate New Westminster's heritage and natural history through educational programs and interpretive signs.
  • Greenways encourage environmental stewardship and appreciation.
  • Greenways provide opportunities to enhance urban vegetation (tree, shrubs and natural plantings).
