Recreation do for Me? There is often a misunderstanding or limited view of what Parks and Recreation provides to you and the community. I sometimes get the feedback that “I don’t use a rec centre and therefore I don’t see the value of the service.” I would counter this point by asking the person where they learned valuable lifelong Active Living skills such as swimming, skating, tennis, soccer, lacrosse and many other activities. I then ask if they have children who are in benefiting from recreation based childcare, music, arts, cooking, dance and discovery programs that build their listening, cooperation and cognitive skills. Do you have parents or grandparents enjoying a senior centre full of friendships, counseling, fitness and independent living support services? It is clear that Parks and Recreation does have a large and positive impact on you and your family throughout your life. Parks and Recreation also plays a significant role working with minor sports organizations such as soccer, lacrosse, hockey, football and baseball teams and leagues. Priority access and reduced or no fees to sports fields, arenas, pools and community centres are some of the benefits of this relationship. Many Parks services and community accomplishments also go unnoticed. The next time you are out walking, biking, jogging or driving through New Westminster, take a moment to look at the lovely and unique trees, beautiful hanging baskets, green traffic circles, intimate trails and greenways, neighbourhood and lovely community parks. I say that Parks and Recreation is all about: Parks and Recreation is about providing you with opportunities. If you have a question about a Parks and Recreation service, I would like to invite you to write me at nwparksrec@city.new-westminster.bc.ca I would love to hear from you and I will answer these questions in a future article.
